Don’t Judge a Book by It’s Cover

There are approximately 1 million new books published each year in the US and less than 1% actually sell more than 5k copies. More shockingly half of all the book sales happen online, which means the in-store browsing experience is disappearing and we don’t want this to happen.

As creators of moving narratives and book geeks above all, it was a dream project to share our vision and imagination on these animated reels that take you beyond the front cover and hopefully help more people discover new books, and hopefully change the way authors release books moving forward.
Each of the three films was approached differently, inspired both by the author and the story and always looking for an ink, printed feeling – as these animations take place inside a book we wanted the style to feel native to paper. Sound design was equally important as the visuals and we crafted a unique world for each of the three stories.

We can now say that there is no need to judge a book by it’s cover anymore.

Book Shopping In-Store going down?

There are approximately 1 million new books published each year in the US and less than 1% actually sell more than 5k copies. More shockingly half of all the book sales happen online, which means the in-store browsing experience is disappearing and we don’t want this to happen.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to share our vision and imagination over this set of incredible stories, now readers can discover new books and authors have a new way of releasing books moving forward.

1- ‘Ghosts’

Written by the amazing Dolly Alderton.

2- ‘Everyone you hate is going to die’

Written by Daniel Sloss.

Daniel is not only an author, he is also a hilarious, irreverent stand-up artist. The book, with the voice of the author himself, has the vibe and the tone of raw and careless comedy inside a book.

He talks about losing the virginity, being young, clumsy and driven by boiling hormones – a time in life when you know nothing but want to try everything, a moment to make mistakes. We were inspired by all of this to create a raw illustration style, with hard ink and messy lines. For the sound design, nothing says ‘youth’ better than punk and a carefree – sometimes out of tune – electric guitar.

The second book is about youth, clumsy sex, love & God.

3- ‘When Women Were Dragons’

Written by Kelly Barnhill.

This third and last book of this series immediately took us back in time to a world made out of watercolors, the sound of horns and…screams – a place where you can find great calm and great chaos.

A feast of watercolours, horns, lots of brave women, a fullfill of dragons and a bit of chaos.

A little bit of Exploration

Initial approaches are always a fun part, this project was not an exception!

There is no need to judge a book by its cover anymore.
